About Pesticides
Frequently asked questions regarding pests and pesticides.
E-Commerce Pesticides
In general, under FIFRA, it is against the law to sell unregistered, misbranded, suspended, or canceled pesticides in the United
States. This means that if someone tries to sell via the Internet a pesticide product or device that is mislabeled, not registered,
or no longer registered, that person could be breaking the law and subject to civil or criminal penalties, including fines.
Enforcement Alert: Pesticides Sold on the Internet Must Be Registered with the U.S. EPA
Visit EPA's website pertaining to pesticides being sold on the Internet.
FIFRA
The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act.
Pesticide Registration (PR) Notices
PR Notices are issued by the Office of Pesticide Programs to inform pesticide registrants and other interested persons about
important policies, procedures and regulatory decisions.
Pesticide Tolerances
EPA sets limits on the amount of pesticides that may remain in or on foods. These limits are called tolerances. The tolerances are
set based on a risk assessment and are enforced by the Food and Drug Administration.
REDS & Pesticide Reregistration Status
EPA is reviewing older pesticides (those initially registered prior to November 1984) under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and
Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) to ensure that they meet current scientific and regulatory standards.
Registering Pesticides
Pesticide registration is the process through which EPA examines the ingredients of a pesticide; the site or crop on which it is to
be used; the amount, frequency and timing of its use; and storage and disposal practices. EPA evaluates the pesticide to ensure
that it will not have unreasonable adverse effects on humans, the environment and non-target species. A pesticide cannot be legally
used if it has not been registered with EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs.
